DEPEYSTER – A retired Ogdensburg police officer died of natural causes after he lost consciousness and crashed his vehicle on State Highway 812 Wednesday.

State police say Michael Stowe, 57, was driving a Kia Sportage northbound with his wife Lori K. Stowe, in the passenger’s seat, when he began experiencing chest pains and lost consciousness.

The vehicle veered across the southbound lane, striking a utility pole and sign off of the west shoulder. The vehicle continued its path north, through the NAPA Auto Parts store parking lot, striking the NAPA sign post. The vehicle exited the parking lot, crossing Fine Street, then came to rest off of the north shoulder of Fine Street upon striking a tree.

Ogdensburg Rescue arrived on scene, transporting Stowe to Claxton Hepburn Medical Center, Ogdensburg, where life saving measures failed.

Dr. Suzanne Elliot pronounced M. Stowe deceased at 5:52 p.m.

The cause of death determined as cardiac arrest and renal failure, due to Stowe being in the final stages of renal failure.

St. Lawrence County Coroner Kevin Crosby listed the manner of death as natural causes.
