MASSENA -- When the state Department of Transportation replaces the decaying Parker Avenue bridge next year, the existing road network connecting Maple and Willow streets will be replaced with a roundabout, Mayor Tim Currier said at Tuesday’s Board of Trustees meeting.
The DOT estimates the project at $17 million, DOT Spokesman Michael Flick said.
A water, sewer and box culvert project tied in with the work would cost about $1.6 million, Public Works Superintendent Hassan Fayad said.
“I am hoping their estimates are very liberal,” Fayad said.
The road that goes under the bridge from the Maple Street extension traffic light to Willow Street will be gone.
“The current structure that goes underneath the bridge will disappear. That will go away,” Currier said.
A three-way roundabout across from Blevins Motors will link the bridge with the surrounding roads.
The new bridge will have two lanes. It used to have four. DOT closed the outer lanes on Dec. 30, 2009. Flick said in March that the drains were letting too much water run onto the supports, which corroded them over time.
He said the bridge is safe just using the inner lanes.
Fayad said the project will start in the spring.
