MASSENA -- Democratic incumbents and newcomers in the town and village of Massena will have no Republican opposition in November. One man is running an independent campaign for a Town Council seat against a Democrat incumbent.

On Thursday evening, the Massena Republican Party Chairperson Sue Bellor said in an email that they will not caucus this year.

“The Massena Republican Committee is not planning a caucus this year. We are supporting our County Legislator Candidate Joel Grigg for Leg. District 14,” Bellor wrote in an email. He ran for village trustee as a Republican in 2016 and lost.

Bellor did not immediately return requests for comment.

The Democrats are fielding mostly incumbents, and one newcomer in the town and village.

For Town Council, the Dems nominated Melanie Cunningham. She was appointed in January to fill an unexpired term, and she will seek a new term. Challenging her is Carl Zender, who is running as an independent.

The Massena Democrats have also nominated Tim Currier for a second term as village mayor, Matt Lebire for a second term as village trustee and Patrick Serguson for another term as village justice.
