Democratic Assemblywoman Addie Russell has denounced what she calls a “big money Super PAC” getting involved in the 116th Assembly District race, but her Republican opponent John Byrne is blasting her stance.
The super PAC, New Yorkers for Independent Action (NYIA), “has no upstate donors and is financed by a small number of wealthy corporate interests and hedge fund millionaires from Connecticut and New York City,” a news release from Russell’s office said.
“The Wall Street millionaires and billionaires who are funding this super PAC couldn’t care less about the North Country,” Russell said in the statement. “I’d be surprised if they could even find the North Country. But suddenly they’re real interested in who folks in the North Country should have as their representative in the Assembly.
“The ad misleads people to believe that I support a huge pay raise for legislators. That’s a lie. I’m against any legislative pay raise," Assemblywoman Russell said. “Always have been.”
“Assemblywoman Russell has a lot of nerve saying she’s not for sale. For 8 years, she’s taken hundreds-of-thousands of dollars in campaign cash from New York City and sold her votes … When her former political boss from New York City was arrested, who this year was sentenced to 12 years in federal prison for embezzling $4 million, she said it was ‘politically motivated’, and she continued to stand by him," Byrne said in a prepared statement. "And Ms. Russell is lying about her pay raise. To avoid public outcry and scrutiny, she voted to empower a commission to decide a pay raise for her and other lawmakers. How cowardly. If you’re so against the pay raise, Ms. Russell, then why did you vote for this commission?"
Russell, a Democrat, is seeking re-election to the 116th Assembly District seat next month. Byrne is running for the office as a Republican.
