DEKALB -- Investigators are still attempting to determine the cause of a fire that severely damaged a building with three apartments and left 11 people without a home.
Firefighters from DeKalb and the Hermon Rescue Squad responded at 11:06 a.m. Wednesday. They were followed by volunteers from departments in Hermon, Canton, Richville, Gouverneur and Rensselaer Falls, while the Heuvelton, Lisbon, Pyrites and Edwards departments stood by.
The Red Cross was also called to the scene to help the people left homeless.
Investigators said one of the three apartments was a complete loss and the other two sustained smoke and water damage.
The structure, at 2910 County Rt. 17, is owned by Eric Turnball, is reportedly covered by insurance. It is also reported that the building used to be a roller rink.
No one was reported hurt in the fire.
The DeKalb Volunteer Fire Department was back in service at 7:04 p.m.
