The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation will upgrade to two bridges critical to the St. Lawrence County snowmobile trail network that are now unfit for use.
The Chap Hill Bridge, Colton, on the Grasse River Conservation Easement (CE), is part of a main snowmobile route. DEC officials say they determined the bridge to be structurally deficient for use as a public snowmobile bridge and replaced it with a stronger, portable bridge.
“The Region 6 Operations staff played a critical role in moving the portable bridge from the Goldmine CE and installing it at the Chap Hill location. DEC also collaborated with the St. Lawrence County Snowmobile Association on this project,” DEC officials said in a news release.
The Morgan Road Bridge, South Colton, was also deemed unsafe for public snowmobile use after it was destroyed by a contractor’s overweight vehicle.
“Plans are in the works to replace the bridge with a permanent one. In the meantime, DEC has installed a portable bridge at this site,” DEC officials said in the release.
