June 26-27 has been designated “Free Fishing Weekend” in New York.
No license is required to fish the state’s waters during this period.
The annual free fishing weekend is an opportunity for residents and visitors to share the sport of fishing with a friend or family member for the first time, or to reignite interest among those who haven’t taken to the water in recent years.
The state Department of Environmental Conservation first held the free fishing weekend in 1991. Visit the DEC’s “Places to Fish” page, http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/7749.html or contact your regional DEC office (http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/7927.html) for recommendations on places to go.
While a state fishing license is not required this weekend, DEC's other fishing rules and regulations remain in effect. To learn more about New York's regulations and information on how and where to obtain a fishing license, visit the DEC’s web page dedicated to fishing: http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/fishing.html.
