DEC biologists aid lake sturgeon reproduction in Massena

Posted

MASSENA -- New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) fisheries biologists spent Thursday morning working to re-establish sturgeon populations in Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence River.

The effort is a partnership with federal officials and the New York Power Authority, which hosted the project at the Robert Moses Power Dam in Massena.

The effort is part of a state management plan to reverse the sturgeon decline in New York rivers. Signs are that it’s working as the river’s population — protected for the past 20 years — reached a 10-year high last year.
