The state Department of Environmental Conservation is accepting applications from St. Lawrence County residents and those across the state for the cooperative Day-Old Pheasant Chick Program.
The program provides day-old pheasant chicks to approved cooperators, who raise the birds and release them on land open to public hunting.
The chicks are available at no cost to participants who can provide a brooding facility, a covered outdoor rearing pen, and an adequate release site. Approved applicants will receive the day-old chicks in April, May, or June. All release sites must be approved in advance by DEC and must be open for public pheasant hunting opportunities.
Those in our area who are interested must file an application by March 28 with the DEC Regional Wildlife Manager in Watertown at 315-785-2263.
Applications and the "Pheasant Rearing Guide" are available on the DEC website.
