The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and the Disabled American Veterans need more volunteer driver to take vets from St. Lawrence County to medical appointments at the Syracuse VA Medical Center and elsewhere.
For more than 20 years – since Congress cut funding for the VA’s Beneficiary Travel program – the volunteer service provided by DAV has stepped up it efforts.
But the DAV says its roster of drivers is aging, and they need some new volunteers to keep the service going.
Veterans of modest means who are too ill to drive themselves might have to skip appointments if they can’t get a lift to the site. A free, friendly ride can make the difference in life to a vet who can use some help.
Safe drivers with current insurance and a valid license can help. Call Bill Gleason at 425-4343 between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. to found out more.
