Dangerously cold temps dropped to -20 in St. Lawrence County Tuesday; warmer weather predicted for weekend

Although dangerously cold, no records were broken yesterday in St. Lawrence County as temperatures dropped well below zero to -20 in parts of the region, according to The Weather Underground.

The coldest parts of the county were in Potsdam, Canton, Ogdensburg and Massena with lows of -20 recorded at the Massena International Airport, which is the closest National Weather Service recording station.

All official temperature records for the northern part of the country are recorded at the airport.

Previous record lows of -40 were records in Potsdam and Massena in 1957. The record low for Canton is -28 and happened in 1971. A -28 degree temperature is the record for Ogdensburg. That frigid day took place in 1971, according to Weather Underground.

In the southern part of the county near Gouverneur and Star Lake, temperatures were reported at -12 degrees, at the KGTB Wheeler-Sack International Airport in Fort Drum, which is the nearest National Weather Service recording station for Star Lake and Gouverneur.

The record low for the southern portion of the county happened in 2004 with a low of -22, Weather Underground said.

Temperatures are expected to climb to around 18 degrees today with wind chill values as low as -9, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).

Overnight lows are predicted around -2 with wind chill factor of -9, NWS said.

The cold snap will last until Friday night with an overnight low around -8, the service says. The weather is expected to improve heading into the weekend as highs of 23 are forecast for Saturday and 37 on Sunday.

The forecast through Tuesday is as follows:

Thursday Partly sunny, with a high near 24. Wind chill values as low as -9. Southwest wind 5 to 13 mph.

Thursday Night Snow showers likely, mainly after midnight. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 12. Southwest wind 9 to 14 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New snow accumulation of 1 to 3 inches possible.

Friday A 40 percent chance of snow showers before 4pm. Partly sunny, with a high near 18. West wind 13 to 17 mph. New snow accumulation of less than one inch possible.

Friday Night Partly cloudy, with a low around -8. West wind 5 to 10 mph.

Saturday Mostly cloudy, with a high near 23. Southeast wind around 6 mph.

Saturday Night Mostly cloudy, with a low around 20. South wind 8 to 11 mph.

Sunday A 50 percent chance of snow showers. Cloudy, with a high near 37. Southwest wind 11 to 13 mph.

Sunday Night A 40 percent chance of snow showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 16. Southwest wind 7 to 11 mph becoming northwest after midnight.
