CANTON -- Christopher J. Burkum, 40, convicted in Wisconsin of sexually assaulting a 15-year-old female by force, is being held on $1,500 bail in Canton for failing to register a change of address.

Burkum reportedly stopped into the Potsdam Police Department Tuesday. Officers there said they found that he was wanted and detained him for St. Lawrence County Sheriff's deputies, according to police.

Burkum was added to the Wisconsin sex offender registry after his conviction Jan. 7, 2005 for second-degree sexual assault of a child in Calumet County.

The Wisconsin page notes that he was released from prison Oct. 14, 2011, and a notification of his release was sent to law enforcement.

On the Wisconsin sex offender registry (http://offender.doc.state.wi.us/public/), Burkum's address is listed as 64 Benton Rd., Potsdam, NY, with a note that the address was updated just this Tuesday.

On the New York sex offender registry, Burkum's page (http://www.criminaljustice.ny.gov/SomsSUBDirectory/offenderDetails.jsp?offenderid=31224) lists 53 North St., Madrid, NY as his address.

The New York notice lists the conviction date as Jan. 7, 2005 in Wisconsin, and lists the victim as a 15-year-old female. The offense description includes sexual intercourse and sexual contact, and notes that he physically overpowered the victim. It also notes that a computer was used in the course of the crime.

The New York page also lists an alias Burkum has used as Christopher Chavez.

Burkum is designated a Level 3 offender, meaning that he is at high risk of a repeat offense and a threat to public safety, a designation which remains on the record for the life of the offender.
