MASSENA -- The voters have had their say and Democrat Timmy Currier will be the village's new mayor. He beat incumbent Republican James Hidy by a nearly 3-to-1 margin.
Currier received 1,941 votes to Hidy's 644.
Those that hit the polls also picked Democrats Tim Ahlfeld, an incumbent and Matt Lebire, a newcomer, for two village trustee seats. They received 1,487 and 1,236 votes, respectively. Republicans Patricia Wilson, an incumbent and R. Shawn Gray garnered respective tallies of 1,126 and 1,081.
"I'm really honored and frankly, humbled, by the support. I promise to work as hard as I can to improve Massena," Currier said.
He says one of his top priorities upon taking office in January will be to work toward a healthier local economy and getting the 2015-2016 budget in order.
"We have to find a way to bring people together and improve the economic situtation in this community. We have challenging times in the village" Currier said.
He said it's too early to tell how he is going to approach next year's spending plan.
He said he thinks he effectively conveyed to voters before the election what they can expect from him as the village's top administrator.
"I worked hard in the campaign to lay out my vision for Massena and demonstrate the leadership style I intend ... I'm thankful people chose to support that," he said.
Currier said he is pleased that the voters pick the two trustees who also ran as Democrats.
"I think the voters had great choices across the board and I'm certainly pleased they supported candidates that were my running mates," he said. "I look forward to working with all board members."
"I think it was a good clean race. Tim did a fine job and I think he'll do a super job as mayor," Hidy said Tuesday night. "I hope he takes the momentum we've created and keeps it going.
"I don't have any regrets. I had a good time."
He expressed gratitude to his suppoters and those close to him.
"I want to say thank you to everyone who supported me, my family and friends. Massena's still a great place to live," he said.
He says he is now planning his course once he leaves the mayor's office in January.
"There's some options I'm considering and we'll see in the next couple of weeks," Hidy said.
