OGDENSBURG – The MS St. Laurent will not be stopping in Ogdensburg, according to Ogdensburg Chamber Executive Director Laura Pearson.
The cruise ship had been schedule to visit the city ten times this summer, but will instead be docking in Clayton. Pearson said the problem arose from the fact that the Dobsiky Center is not considered a secure location.
The chamber and city officials were hoping to work out a deal where the ship could dock at the Port of Ogdensburg, which is considered a secure location. However, the cruise line opted out before a deal could be worked out.
Pearson said the city and Ogdensburg Port Authority are still trying to figure out the logistics to allow for the cruise line, or others, to make an Ogdensburg stop next year. It would also allow of other vessels to avoid conflicts down the road.
“Unfortunately it won’t be coming, but we are still moving forward,” Pearson said.
Pearson said its unfortunate as the ship would have brought approximately 2,000 tourists to the city, but said the chamber has become educated on the issue and is hopeful similar problems can be avoided in the future.
The chamber had been hoping to offer Ogdensburg souvenirs that could be purchased at the Dobisky Center.
“For now we just have to move on and look to the future,” she said.
