CRANBERRY LAKE -- Cranberry Lake Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department has a new snowmobile to transport injured patients out of the woods just as the 2013-2014 snow season is upon us.

The new sled, a 2014 Polaris Widerak Utility sled, replaces a 20-year-old machine and is more than capable of handling the department requirements, according to Matthew Glavin. The old sled remains as a backup.

Each year the department is called into the woods for accidents requiring the use of the snowmobile and rescue sled to transport injured patients to a waiting ambulance.

Glavin said that last year a life was saved because of the department’s ability to stabilize and transport a patient several miles out of the woods to the ambulance, and then on to a waiting helicopter at the CLFR parking lot.

The new snowmobile was purchased with a grant from the Damoth Fund distributed by the Adirondack Foundation. Additional funds were donated by the Cranberry Lake Mountaineers Snowmobile Club.

The department adds a note to sledders: If you’re out riding at night and come across a sled with red lights on the trail, please take necessary precautions and reduce your speed and be prepared to stop.
