Shelly Shirley, 44, and Anthony Gladle, 32, are each charged with second-degree attempted murder and second-degree assault, according to documents filed with St. Lawrence County Court.
A grand jury handed up the charges in a Thursday indictment, according to Assistant District Attorney Joshua Haberkornhalm.
[img_assist|nid=178810|title=Gladle|desc=|link=none|align=left|width=175|height=219]The indictment says between February 2014 and Jan. 7, 2016, Shirley and Gladle attempted to kill Dodger J. Gladle by way of starvation.
The indictment also says the starvation caused the child serious physical injury.
“The grand jury heard evidence, they made a decision. I’m pleased with the decision they made,” Haberkornhalm said Friday. “It’s still an accusation, defendants are still presumed innocent. I look forward to prosecuting this at trial.”
Shirley and Gladle were collared after St. Lawrence County Child Protective Services, state police received an anonymous tip and investigated the residence to check on the child. The boy was found to be severely malnourished and required immediate medical attention, police said at the time.
The child was removed from the home and placed under care of the county Department of Social Services.
Gladle is a level two registered sex offender. He was convicted of second-degree rape in 2004 for allegedly raping a 14-year-old girl that year.
