Unemployment in the North Country receded in March, according to figures released today by the state Department of Labor.
In St. Lawrence County, the percentage of unemployed dropped below 11 percent – but barely.
It stood at 10.9 percent in March, compared with 11.3 percent in February, and the 11.2 percent recorded in March 2010.
Neighboring counties saw similar reductions in March.
Jefferson County, just to our west, also saw the unemployment rate drop to 10.9 percent in March, down from 11.6 percent in February and from the 11 percent reported in March 2010.
In Franklin County, to our east, the figure for March was 9.3 percent, down from 9.9 percent in February and from 10.3 percent in March 2010.
The rate for the state as a whole similarly dropped, from 8.7 percent in February to 8.0 percent in March.
The rate across the U.S. is reported as 9.2 percent in March, down from 9.5 percent in February.
