CANTON – County legislators recognized the championship Canton Central School girls outdoor track and field team at a Monday meeting.

Rebecca DelRossi, Maria Ricalton, Gemma DelRossi and Laura Pierce claimed the State Division II Title in the 3,2000-meter relay setting a Section 10 record of 9:08.5.

The girls beat the second place Bronxville team by nearly five second and advanced to the New Balance Nationals in Greensboro, NC.

In the resolution legislators said the team had not run a “4 x 1 mile relay” this season and because none of the foursome had even run a classic mile race competitively, they were placed in the unseeded heat.

The Golden Bears Team also won the girls 4-mile-relay, completing the race in 20 minutes and 19.84 seconds in the unseeded section and finishing with a 10 second margin of victory over a team from Carmel, Indiana for the national championship.

The resolution says all four standout runners in the National and State Championship relays have each excelled on an individual level as well and all three of the seniors will compete in the NCAA Division I next season.

The resolution also said the season was a testimonial to the hard work and dedication of coaches Barry Whiteford and Paul Pierce.

“St. Lawrence County is very proud of the accomplishments of the team as student athletes for devoting the time and energy, putting forth a team effort, thereby bringing honor and credit to your School, Community, and County,” the resolution said. “It is with great pride that the Board of Legislators recognizes the outstanding accomplishments of the Canton High School Girls Outdoor Track and Field Team and their coaches on their impressive and successful Championship season.”
