WEST STOCKHOLM – A former St. Lawrence County legislator who served three terms on the board has died.

Duana D. Carey passed at home with her family by her side and under the care of Hospice, on Wednesday evening.

In 1984 Carey was asked to fill the county legislative seat being vacated by Augustus “Gus” Marscher. She went on to be re-elected three times as the St. Lawrence County Legislator representing Stockholm, Parishville and part of Potsdam between 1984 and 1998 when she retired.

Carey served on the Central Services, Community Services, Health, Finance, Social Services, Transportation and Planning and Operations Committees.

She also served as the legislature’s vice chairperson for two years and chairperson for one.

In 2007 she was honored with the Betsy Kaplan Award for “Distinguished Service to the St. Lawrence County Republican Party.” She was arguably one of the most honest, hard-working, respected members of the St. Lawrence County Legislature who was liked by Republicans and Democrats alike.

She was born to Ethel (Emmons) Dorothy and Willard Dorothy at their home in Childwold, on March 21, 1933. At only 2 pounds 12oz at birth, she exhibited a strength and will to live that would prove formidable throughout her life, her obituary says.

After her father’s death in 1938, Carey’s family left Childwold and settled in West Stockholm where they would all live the rest of their lives.

She attended the two-room school in West Stockholm until 8th grade and transferred to Potsdam High School where she would graduate in 1950, according to her obituary. After her graduation from Potsdam High School in 1950, Carey attended the Watertown School of Commerce with the goal of working for the United Methodist Conference.

Over the years she worked for the Raquette River Paper Company, the State Bank of Norwood, and Robert H. Halladay Law Firm.

In 1966, she was elected Town Clerk for the town of Stockholm. She held this position until 1973 when she accepted a job at SUNY Potsdam. Between 1973 and her retirement in 1985, Duana worked in the Hormann Library, the Registrar’s Office and the Bursar’s Office at SUNY Potsdam.

She was also a member of the West Stockholm United Methodist Church, West Stockholm United Methodist Women, Wesleyan Service Guild, West Stockholm Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary, Women’s Republican Club of Stockholm, and the St. Lawrence County Republican Committee.

In retirement Carey volunteered for Hospice and Palliative Care of St. Lawrence Valley and the Canton-Potsdam Hospital Gift Shop.
