County Historical Association creating memory tree in Canton to honor 7,000 who served in Civil War

CANTON – The St. Lawrence County Historical Association at the Silas Wright House will decorate a special memory tree at the museum in honor of all of the nearly 7,000 men from St. Lawrence County who served in the Civil War.

This Civil War memory tree is part of the SLCHA’s Commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the Civil War, which began in 1861.

For each contribution of $5, the SLCHA will make a memory tag for the Civil War veteran of your choice to hang on the tree. The tag will be in baseball card-style, with all of the “stats” of the veteran as well as his picture, if available.

At the SLCHA’s annual Holiday Open House on Dec. 2, the names of all the veterans on the tree will be read and remembered. And after the holidays, you will receive your veteran’s card as a keepsake.

Application forms are available at the SLCHA, 3 East Main St., or by email at info@slcha.org.

As part of the project, the SLCHA will be archiving the information you send regarding your ancestors and scanning any available images of local Civil War veterans to add to its growing collection of St. Lawrence County’s Civil War heritage.
