County officials are warning residents of a scheme being perpetrated by mail that tries to persuade people to buy copies of their deeds.
County Clerk Mary Lou Rupp says that landowners "do not need a certified copy if they already have the original."
Rupp also says anyone can get a certified copy from her office for $5, and not the $59.50 to $87 that she says the schemers are charging.
And she notes that a certified copy of a deed on St. Lawrence County property can only come from her office, so anyone falling for the scheme is probably paying way too much.
Anyone who receives mail like this can call the Clerk's Office at 379-2237.
People may also call with questions, or to arrange to get a copy of their deed for $5.
