County board committee tables resolution on 21-year-old tobacco age

CANTON -- St. Lawrence County’s Services Committee, which includes all members of the legislature, has tabled a resolution to raise the tobacco age to 21.

Even if the bill had passed it would have needed approval from the full board of legislators. A public hearing for the proposed law is set for June 5 at 6 p.m. at the St. Lawrence County Board of Legislators chamber in Canton.

The version of the resolution tabled by the committee included provision that would allow the director of public health to recommend a penalty minimum of $300, but not to exceed $1,000 for the first offense of selling tobacco to someone under age 21.

Second offenses would increase to a range of $500 to $1,500.

At a recent meeting Ogdensburg officials unanimously refused to support the resolution.

The recommendation would be made by the county administrator, upon conferral with the county attorney.
