CANTON – St. Lawrence County held a special meeting Monday to consider a contract with ProAct Pharmacy Services that could save the county up to $500,000.

St. Lawrence County Administrator Ruth Doyle says the county has contracted with the company for prescription drugs for services for the past two years and is looking to renew its contract early to achieve additional savings.

The agreement was set to expire in June.

St. Lawrence County has established a committee chaired by David Forsythe, R-Lisbon, to identify potential savings. The county is also meeting quarterly with union officials to ensure they are part of conservations regarding their health insurance.

The agreement is part of a larger effort by the county to reduce health insurance expenses.

The county is self-insured, but is searching for ways to reduce administration and other costs that it has control over. The county recently approved a change in administrators and which may result in savings down the road.

Doyle says the renewed contract with ProAct will save the county an estimated 10 percent over its 2016 costs, which is estimated around $500,000.
