GOUVERNEUR – More than 100 correctional officers from Gouverneur Correctional Facility will picket Wednesday to inform the public of what they say is ongoing violence against officers at the hands of inmates.
Approximately 100 to 200 officers will gather from 1 to 4 p.m. to bring attention to what organizers say is a rise in violence inside the prisons.
They will also discuss staffing needs and the need for continued investment in technology to make prisons safer.
Statewide, since 2010, the number of assaults on staff by inmates has risen 55 percent, according to a press release from the New York State Correctional Officers & Police Benevolent Association, Inc.
This is the ninth picket that NYSCOPBA has held in the past two months.
Members previously held pickets at Elmira, Attica, Livingston, Collins, Greene, Coxsackie, Orleans, Marcy and Shawangunk state prisons.
