CANTON -- The Master Food Preserver and Master Gardener volunteers will be at the Canton Farmers Market on the first Friday of the month throughout the market season. These dates are June 1, July 6, Aug.3, Sept. 7 and Oct. 5, 2018.

In addition to answering preservation and horticulture questions, the Master Gardeners will offer free soil pH tests.

Bring your pressure canner gauge and the Master Food Preservers will test it for accuracy.

These services are free and help promote a successful year in the yard and the kitchen.

Visitors to the Master Gardener booth can also learn about the upcoming season of food preservation classes in the Harvest Kitchen at the Extension Learning Farm.

The Master Gardener Program is a national program of trained volunteers who work in partnership with their county Cooperative Extension offices to extend gardening information to the local community.

More than 1,500 volunteer Master Gardeners in New York State contribute educational services to meet the outreach mission of Cornell, influencing many thousands of consumers on horticultural issues.

CCE of St. Lawrence County is offering a training for new volunteers September-December 2018.

If interested, the application can be picked up at the Extension office or printed from the CCE website. Application deadline is June 1.

The Master Food Preserver volunteer program is new to St. Lawrence County as of 2017 and offers courses in a range of preservation methods including: water bath canning, fermentation, drying, freezing and pressure canning.

The courses feature hands-on workshops using locally grown meat and produce.
