CANTON -- With a controversial election season looming, the St. Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office says they will investigate and prosecute reports of people stealing political signs from lawns or public places.
“As a friendly reminder to everyone, the sheriff’s office would like to emphasize the fact that lawn signs of any kind, including political candidate signs, are the property of the candidate or in many cases those property owners who have placed them in their yard,” according to a news release from Sheriff Kevin Wells.
He says people who steal such signs could be charged with petit larceny, trespass or criminal trespass.
“Whether they were placed by the property owner or by other supporters of the candidate, they are still someone else’s property and they are not free to be removed just because one person has a different point of view than another,” the release reads.
