The St. Lawrence River Control Board will increase levels on Lake St. Lawrence temporarily to assist with boat haul-out on the first weekend of October.
Lake St. Lawrence River includes areas of the river adjacent to Waddington, Massena and Louisville.
The levels of Lake St. Lawrence have been low for several months because of the recent relatively high outflows from Lake Ontario.
The low water levels can make it difficult for boaters to remove watercraft.
The board recently reviewed conditions in the Lake Ontario-St. Lawrence River system and has decided to under-discharge the river relative to plan-specified flows during Oct. 4 to increase water levels in Lake St Lawrence by up to 30 cm (1 foot).
High northeast winds or adverse weather conditions may lower the local levels, despite the reduction in outflows.
Strong winds can lower water levels temporarily by over 2 feet in some locations.
The following weekend, the weekend of the Canadian Thanksgiving, the board will gradually increase outflows to restore water levels, relative to Plan 1958-D, so Lake St. Lawrence levels can be expected to lower following this period of assistance on the earlier weekend, 4 October 2014.
Outflow changes are posted to the board’s Facebook site at www.facebook.com/ISLRBC (English) or www.facebook.com/CICFSL (French) and the board’s Website at http://ijc.org/en_/islrbc under the maps & data tab, Lake Ontario outflow changes. Water level information is also available on our website under the same maps & data tab.
