STOCKHOLM – A GoFundMe account set up to help the lone survivor of a fire Tuesday has surpassed $23,000 toward a goal of $30,000.
Carrie Bugbee, a Potsdam McDonald’s worker from West Stockholm who has been hospitalized after the blaze that killed her three children and her husband, was taken to Canton-Potsdam Hospital for treatment Tuesday and will face huge expenses as she recovers.
Her friend and co-worker Annette Peacock is appealing to the community through the web page at https://www.gofundme.com/4w2bn5s for money to help Mrs. Bugbee through the devastating tragedy.
“I’m so heartbroken for Carrie that I’m numb inside,” wrote Peacock on the GoFundMe page. “Asking for anything even a just a dollar anything is a help, money will help to help her with funeral services and just a little something to get her on her feet,” she said.
By this morning nearly 500 people had contributed more than $22,000 in one day.
The original fundraising goal was set at $10,000, but that has been revised to $30,000 as donations came in and the gravity of her situation became clear, with the loss of her family, her home, and everything they owned.
At around 3 a.m. Tuesday morning, St. Lawrence County 911 dispatched Brasher-Winthrop, Potsdam, West Stockholm, Norwood and Norfolk fire departments, along with Tri-Town Rescue to the Pickle Street home.
The residence was a trailer with additions attached to it, according to Brasher-Winthrop Fire Department First Assistant Chief Ryan McCuin.
McCuin said the house was on fire on all four sides and is considered a total loss.
Mrs. Bugbee reportedly escaped from a window.
The deceased are William M Bugbee, 55, Allazza L Bugbee, 5, Alicia N. Bugbee, 6, and Shaylee L. Baxter, 14.

St. Lawrence County and state authorities continue to look for the origin and cause of the fire.
Funeral arrangements with Donaldson-Seymour Funeral Home, Potsdam, are incomplete.
