CANTON -- SUNY Canton and the Office of the St. Lawrence County Attorney Stephen D. Button hosted New York State Supreme Court Justice Vito C. Caruso for a Constitution Day celebration at the Richard W. Miller Campus Center's Kingston Theater.
Two St. Lawrence County Chapters of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Nihanawate and Swe-kat-si, were invited to the event by Mr. Button. The ceremony was free and open to the public. Representatives of Senator Patty Ritchie and Assemblywoman Addie Russell were invited guests.
Court Justice Caruso presented a lecture entitled "The Constitution, its Origins - and its Futureā He spoke of the history of the United State Constitution and how it works for all of us. He also pointed out that our New York State Constitution predates the US Constitution. He emphasized that the New Yorkers have the opportunity for a constitutional convention in 2019; a referendum is scheduled and to be voted whether or not we will convene a convention on November 7, 2017.
