MASSENA – Seven commercial vessels are delayed in the lineup for Eisenhower Lock in the St. Lawrence Seaway while authorities try to determine how to deal with a cruise ship that ran into the lock wall.
The Saint Lawrence Seaway Development Corporation (SLSDC) reports that the cruise ship “Saint Laurent” is in Eisenhower Lock and will remain there until salvage plans are defined.
The ship, a 286-foot cruise ship that has several trips up and down the Seaway scheduled this summer, reportedly struck an approach wall bumper around 9:15 p.m. as it was entering Eisenhower Lock, the U.S. Coast Guard reported.
Several injuries were reported among the 274 people, including passengers and crew, aboard at the time.
The ship is stable and most passengers remained onboard overnight, according to the SLSDC. No pollution as a result of the accident has been reported
Navigation remains suspended until the ship can be cleared from the lock.
Inspectors from the SLSDC and the U.S. Coast Guard continue to assess the situation.
The cause of the incident is not yet determined.
