COLTON -- A Colton-Pierrepont Central graduate has penned his first book "Slow Code" which he describes as a real life account of his experiences and misadventures as a nurse after leaving Northern New York.

Kelsey D. Burnham says his book, which was released March 25 on Amazon.com, deals with the controversial practice where healthcare providers only 'pretend' to intervene in an emergency medical situation.

The book is based on a true story and is described as a raw, and unedited edition of "Slow Code. Slow code, or 'Hollywood code" is a controversial practice by which a patient is purposely allowed to die, while staff only pretend to intervene, Burnham says.

"Psychiatric unit of a hospital can be, well…a little crazy, especially for a young and frivolous male nurse. But a transfer to a medical unit soon exposes who is really crazy, in a laugh-out-loud, eye-opening look at what goes on behind closed doors in America’s hospitals. You will be amused, enlightened, and probably rather disturbed,” he says.

Born in Potsdam and graduating from Colton-Pierrepont Central School in 1994, Burnham graduated from SUNY Canton, continued his education at North Country Community College and is currently working on his masters’ degree. at Southern New Hampshire University.

He spent some time working as a registered nurse in St. Lawrence County before moving away.

“The book is based on how I learned about the subject, no real names or locations were used, I feel like it is something that needs attention, and stems from deeper problems within our healthcare system,” he said.

This is Burnham’s first book but he says he plans to write more.

The book is 250 pages and retails for $11.4 and can be found on Amazon both in print and ebook, searchable under "Slow Code" or "K.D. Burnham."
