COLTON – A 74-year-old man was arrested and jailed Monday for allegedly receiving more than $10,000 in social services benefits he was not entitled to.

John R. Williams Sr., 175 Chapel Hill Rd., was charged with welfare fraud third degree following an investigation by St. Lawrence County sheriff’s deputies.

Deputies said he submitted fraudulent shelter verification forms to the St. Lawrence County Department of Social Services from Oct. 26, 2006 to July 31, 2011 and received $10,369.34 in vendor rent benefits.

He was arraigned Monday before Pierrepont Town Justice Robert Camp, then sent to St. Lawrence County Correctional Facility in Canton in lieu of $10,000 cash bail or $20,000 bail bond.
