College-bound seniors from Norwood, Potsdam, DeKalb and Canton Central earn North Country This Week scholarships

Four area high school seniors who plan to attend college next fall have each received $500 North Country This Week scholarships.

They are Shannon Colbert of Norwood-Norfolk Central School, Robert L. Drake III of Canton’s Hugh C. Williams High School, Konnor Bigwarfe of Potsdam Central High School and Jenevieve “Jenny” Ann Spadaccini of Hermon-DeKalb Central School.

To be considered for the scholarships, students must plan to attend college in St. Lawrence County, majoring in health care, criminal justice, education, politics, communication or some other community service-oriented occupation. Children of North Country This Week employees are also eligible for the scholarships.

Colbert plans to attend SUNY Canton, enrolled in the Physical Therapy Assistant Program. She is the daughter of Patrick and Patricia Colbert of Norwood,

In high school, she participated in Key Club, and was a member of the Honor Society. She participated in work-study in the pre-kindergarten room and was involved in photography.

Community activities included participation in Relay for Life, and volunteering at the Norwood Beach Triathlon, Norwood Lake Regatta, Special Olympics, freshmen orientation and with NNCS PAL. She babysits on a regular basis.

Drake will also be attending SUNY Canton, enrolled in the Criminal Justice Program. He is the son of Robert and Naomi Drake of DeKalb.

He has been a student body advisor for Upward Bound and involved in the Leos, Liberty Partnership Program and Upward Bound. He is currently president of the local Future Farmers of America.

He has done community service work for the DeKalb Junction barbecue, adoption of a highway and the Dairy Princess Parade. He plans to become a part-time firefighter in keeping with his family tradition.

Bigwarfe plans to attend SUNY Potsdam as an education/history major. He is the son of Brooks Bigwarfe and the late Joanne Bigwarfe.

He has played a variety of sports including varsity golf, basketball and lacrosse.

He has also volunteered as referee for the Potsdam Youth Basketball Association, and plans to continue working with and donating his time to kids involved in youth sports, perhaps coaching a youth team.

Spadaccini plans to attend Mohawk Valley Community College, majoring in graphic design and illustration. She is the daughter of Julie and Allen Spadaccini of DeKalb Junction. Her mother is employed at North Country This Week.

Spadaccini also attended Northwest Tech in Ogdensburg where she was enrolled in the Graphic Communications class for two years. She hopes to have a career with a small design company or a media franchise.

During her time at BOCES, she designed the prom ticket for her junior prom as well as a 3D presentation shown during prom. She created several activity pages for a coloring book that was given to the children at the Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center in Ogdensburg.

Spadaccini participated in both the student council and the art club at Hermon-Dekalb and was a member of the 2013 Northwest Tech yearbook staff.
