MASSENA – A cruise ship carrying nearly 300 people hit a wall in the Eisenhower Lock in the Saint Lawrence Seaway Thursday night causing injuries to passengers, according to the Coast Guard.
The Saint Laurent cruise ship, a 286-foot cruise ship that in Massena, reportedly struck an approach wall bumper around 9:15 p.m. as it was entering Eisenhower Lock.
The vessel remains in the lock, where the water has been drained, while response crews remove injured passengers.
There were 274 people, including passengers and crew, aboard at the time.
At 9:45 p.m., a search-and-rescue controller at Coast Guard Sector Buffalo received notification of the allision.
A crew aboard a 25-foot response boat from Coast Guard Station Alexandria Bay, New York, responded along with a marine inspector from Coast Guard Marine Safety Detachment Massena.
The ship will remain in the lock with both doors closed until it can be moved to different location. The ship is stable and no pollution is reported.
The Saint Laurent is a cruise ship owned by International Shipping Partners.
The cause of the collision is under investigation.
The Saint Lawrence Seaway Development Corporation, U.S. Coast Guard, New York State Police all responded to the incident.
Navigation is suspended until further notice, the Coast Guard said.
