Rain and snow showers in the North Country are dissipating today as a low pressure area exits the region to the east and high pressure begins to build in from the west.

That will make for cloudy but drier conditions prevailing this afternoon, the National Weather Service predicts, with high temperatures in the mid 30s and wind from the west at 10 to 15 mph.

Clouds are expected to remain tonight as the temperature drops to near the freezing mark, or to the upper 20s in the mountains.

It will remain cloudy Sunday with highs approaching 50 degrees, and overnight lows around 30, the NWS says.

The high pressure that’s moving in should make for a sunny day Monday with highs in the mid 40s, and dry weather and seasonal temperatures are expected through mid-week.

The NWS forecast for the St. Lawrence Valley and the northwestern Adirondacks:

•Tonight: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 31. Southwest wind 5 to 9 mph.

•Sunday: Partly sunny, with a high near 52. West wind 7 to 13 mph.

•Sunday Night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 31. Southwest wind 5 to 7 mph becoming calm in the evening.

•Monday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 47. Calm wind becoming northwest 5 to 7 mph in the morning.

•Monday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 32. Light northeast wind.

•Tuesday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 49. Light east wind.

•Tuesday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 35. East wind around 6 mph.

•Wednesday: Mostly cloudy, with a high near 57. Southeast wind 7 to 11 mph.

•Wednesday Night: A 30 percent chance of showers after 1am. Cloudy, with a low around 46. South wind around 14 mph.

•Thursday: A 50 percent chance of showers. Cloudy, with a high near 56. South wind 11 to 14 mph.
