Clouds and rain continue in North Country, but Sunday could live up to its name

The National Weather Service is holding out hope for some sunshine for the whole of St. Lawrence County on Sunday, but clouds and a chance of rain will prevail for today and Saturday.

We can expect periods of light to moderate rain today and Saturday with winds increasing Saturday afternoon into evening out of the west, getting gusty Saturday night, forecasters say.

Highs today and Saturday are expected to be in the mid 40s, with lows tonight in the upper 30s, while they will likely dip below freezing into the mid to upper 20s Saturday night.

Sunday will be fairly nice with partly to mostly sunny skies, light winds and seasonably cool temperatures, before clouds quickly return with unsettled weather for the middle of next week.

The NWS forecast for the St. Lawrence Valley and northwestern Adirondacks:

• Today: A 40 percent chance of showers, mainly before 3pm. Cloudy, with a high near 45. Northeast wind 6 to 8 mph. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.

• Tonight: A slight chance of showers before 9pm, then a chance of rain, mainly after 4am. Cloudy, with a low around 39. Light west wind. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.

• Saturday: Rain, mainly before noon, then showers likely after noon. High near 42. West wind 5 to 10 mph increasing to 11 to 16 mph in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 28 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible.

• Saturday Night: A 30 percent chance of showers before 7pm. Cloudy, then gradually becoming partly cloudy, with a low around 28. West wind 9 to 18 mph, with gusts as high as 33 mph. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.

• Sunday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 45. West wind around 6 mph.

• Sunday Night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 33. East wind 3 to 6 mph.

• Monday: A chance of rain and snow showers before 9am, then a chance of rain showers. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 52. Southeast wind around 8 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%.

• Monday Night: A 50 percent chance of showers. Cloudy, with a low around 44. Southeast wind 6 to 8 mph.

• Tuesday: Showers likely. Cloudy, with a high near 60. Southeast wind around 8 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%.

• Tuesday Night: Rain. Low around 50. Southeast wind around 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%.

• Wednesday: A 50 percent chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 57. Southwest wind 11 to 16 mph.

• Wednesday Night: A 50 percent chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 40. Southwest wind around 15 mph.

• Thursday: A 30 percent chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 47. West wind 14 to 16 mph.
