Close to 12,000 customers -- more than a quarter of National Grid's electric customers in St. Lawrence County -- are reported to be without power and the utility doesn't expect it to be restored until 11:45 p.m. tonight at the earliest.

As of 5 p.m., 11,938 of the company's 42,787 customers in St. Lawrence County were reported to be waiting for the power to come back on.

When the outages began this morning, National Grid expected to have power restored within an hour or two, but after reassessment, they estimated the late-night hour.

Of the total, 5,118 customers in Ogdensburg and Morristown had no power.

Another 3,164 customers in the Canton-Potsdam area were out.

About 800 customers in Lisbon and another 984 in the town of Norfolk had no power.

Earlier today, Massena Electric said 80 to 100 of their customers along Plum Brook Road off of Rt. 420 were without power. Other than that, said Dep. Supt. Dale Raymo, they are responding to isolated calls, “all tree-limb related.”

With snow continuing to fall on top of slush and temperatures dropping, travel is expected to be tricky, and people should take appropriate measures, the St. Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office and the county Office of Emergency Services are warning.

A winter weather advisory remains in effect through midnight.
