St. Lawrence County and other local municipalities in Sen. Joe Griffo’s 47th Senate District will share several million in Consolidated Highway Improvement Program (CHIPs) and Extreme Winter Recovery grants, according to Sen. Joe Griffo, R-Rome.

Meanwhile, Sen. Patty Ritchie says communities in her 48th District could benefit from a $2.5 million increase in state budget funding for roads and bridges.

The increase in Consolidated Highway Improvement Program (CHIPs) means a total of $22.5 million in local highway aid for Northern and Central New York.

The new state spending plan includes an increase of $50 million statewide in CHIPs funding, the second increase in as many years to the program that local governments rely on to balance road repair budgets. The 2014-15 State Budget included an extra $40 million in CHIPs funds.

Also contained in the budget is a total of nearly $715 million in aid to municipalities, including a $2 million increase in aid to villages throughout the state.

Girffo’s 47th District goes through a north-south swath through the center of St. Lawrence County, starting at Massena and ending in the Clifton-Fine area, including Potsdam. It extends into Lewis and Oneida counties.

Ritchie’s 48th District covers much of northern and western St. Lawrence County, from Louisville to Hammond and down to Fowler. It includes Ogdensburg, Canton and Gouverneur and extends into Jefferson and Oswego counties.

The following shows 47th District municipalites, followed by its CHIPs allocation and Extreme Winter Recovery award, according to Griffo:

St. Lawrence County, $3,903,962, $418,497

Clifton, $58,358, $8,498

Fine, $158,048, $23,237

Massena (town), $89,257, $12,548

Massena (village), $220,974, $30,630

Norfolk, $135,078, $20,230

Pierrepont, $193,223, $28,641

Potsdam (town), $290,528, $42,698

Potsdam (village), $88,750, $12,371

Russell, $191,720, $28,110

Stockholm, $233,896, $34,875

“The repair and maintenance of roadway infrastructure throughout Lewis and St. Lawrence counties can be a daunting task for any municipality, and hopefully this funding will help ensure that anyone traveling within our communities will have a smooth ride,” Griffo said. “The economic growth of our region depends upon roads that are not only well-maintained, but that are also safe and sturdy for motorists to travel.”

“From potholes to surface damage, we’re now beginning to see the major toll this year’s harsh winter has taken on or local roads,” Sen. Patty Ritchie said.
