BRASHER – A Massena man was jailed Saturday night for felony driving while intoxicated after he reportedly lost control of his vehicle, ran off the road and struck a snow embankment, according to state police.

Massena-based troopers say they charged Michael J. Markes, 37, with felony DWI, unsafe speed and failure to use a designated lane at 9:57 p.m.

Markes allegedly had a blood-alcohol-content of .19 percent.

He reportedly had a previous DWI conviction within the last 10 years, which raises his current DWI charge to a felony.

Markes was arraigned in Brasher Town Court and sent to St. Lawrence County Jail on $1,000 bail, troopers said.

Officers said he is to answer the charges in court on Feb. 18 at 4 p.m.

CLIFTON – A Cranberry Lake man was jailed on felony driving while intoxicated charges after state police say they responded to a vehicle off the road on State Route 3 early Saturday morning.

Star-Lake-based troopers said David P. Whitford, 30, was charged with felony DWI for having a previous DWI conviction within the last 10 years.

Troopers said they responded to the accident around 3:50 a.m. and discovered the driver had left the scene of the accident.

Whitford was located at a residence a short time later and his blood-alcohol-content was revealed to be .12 percent, officers said.

He was also reportedly cited for failure to keep right.

Troopers said he was arraigned in Clifton Town Court and sent to St. Lawrence County Jail on $2,000 bail.

He is scheduled to appear in court to answer the charges on Feb. 18 at 7 p.m.
