Clear skies Sunday and Monday, frost could hit the mountains Sunday night

Clear skies and temperatures in the low 50s today could give way to temperatures at freezing and the first frost in the mountains tonight, the National Weather Service says.

They call for partly sunny in Ogdensburg, with decreasing clouds in Massena, Potsdam, Canton, Gouverneur and Star Lake. Meteorologists say they that will be accompanied by temperatures in the low to mid-50s.

Skies are expected to be partly cloudy tonight with temperatures getting down to 32 with patchy frost in Star Lake, forecasters say. They say the thermometer could read 38 in Canton and Potsdam, 37 in Ogdensburg and Gouverneur and 36 in Massena.

The NWS says that will give way tomorrow to morning frost with temperatures in the high 50s in Star Lake.

Elsewhere in the county, the skies should be partly sunny on Monday with temperatures in the low-60s.

Monday night could get a bit wet, meteorologists say. They are calling for a 60-percent chance of rain countywide with temperatures in the high-40s.

The detailed forecast for Canton:

• This afternoon - Cloudy, then gradually becoming mostly sunny, with a high near 53. West wind around 6 mph.

• Tonight - Partly cloudy, with a low around 38. Light and variable wind.

• Monday - Partly sunny, with a high near 63. Southwest wind 3 to 8 mph.

• Monday night - Showers likely, mainly between 1am and 4am. Cloudy, with a low around 50. Southwest wind around 6 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.

• Tuesday - A 30 percent chance of showers before 9am. Cloudy through mid morning, then gradual clearing, with a high near 62. West wind 5 to 10 mph. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.

• Tuesday night - Partly cloudy, with a low around 44. Southwest wind around 7 mph.

• Wednesday - Mostly sunny, with a high near 59. West wind 3 to 7 mph.

• Wednesday night - Mostly cloudy, with a low around 41. Light west wind.

• Thursday - Mostly sunny, with a high near 55. North wind 3 to 6 mph.

• Thursday night - Mostly clear, with a low around 38. North wind around 5 mph becoming calm in the evening.

• Friday - Sunny, with a high near 60. Light and variable wind.

• Friday night - Partly cloudy, with a low around 45. South wind 3 to 6 mph.

• Saturday - Mostly sunny, with a high near 69. South wind 7 to 10 mph.
