He replaces Nathan Howell who served as the hospital’s chief executive since September 2014.

“We are happy that Chuck has agreed to fulfill the role of interim CEO,” Joe Tracy, co-chairman of the CEO search committee, said in a prepared statement. He continued, “He brings a wealth of experience to Claxton-Hepburn that will help provide stability to the organization until a permanent CEO is identified.”

The CEO search used a professional search firm that screened over 40 potential candidates and presented the top four candidates.

“I am pleased how well our search committee process worked,” explained Russ Strait, co-chairman of the search committee, said in a prepared statement. “Committee members included individuals from the board, medical staff, and hospital management who did a great job vetting applicants and ultimately selected the best candidate.”

Gijanto was the committee’s unanimous choice.

During his more than 30-year career, Gijanto has worked as chief executive officer, chief financial officer, or chief operating officer in several hospitals, including Fletcher Allen Health Care, CVPH, Baystate Health in Springfield, Mass. and Massena Memorial Hospital. Most recently, he worked as interim president and CEO at Oswego Health.

“I’m thrilled to have been selected to lead Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center and very much look forward to working with the with everyone to further the mission of the organization and to build upon the great work that has been done these past few years under Nate Howell’s leadership,” Gijanto said in a news release from Claxton-Hepburn. “CHMC and its affiliated organizations have a great legacy in the region and I am excited to be a part of it. Healthcare is an extremely challenging environment right now, I am committed to rolling up my sleeves and helping to move us forward to meet those challenges.”

Gijanto lives in Ticonderoga. His education background includes a master’s degree in health systems administration from Rochester Institute of Technology and a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Siena College. When not working, Gijanto enjoys biking, running, golf, reading, Civil War history, and rock and roll history.
