OGDENSBURG -- Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center is joining healthcare organizations across the nation to celebrate what they call "National Surgical Technologists Week," Sept. 17-23.
In 1984, the Association of Surgical Technologists Board of Directors dedicated the third week in September to recognize the surgical technologist profession.
Surgical technologists, under the supervision of a surgeon, make sure that the operating room is efficient while ensuring patient safety.
They ensure that the operating room is sterile and stocked with supplies and equipment needed during operations.
Additionally, they make sure that all of the equipment necessary for the procedure is properly disinfected and assembled.
They also check that the equipment is in working order and place sterile solutions in areas where doctors can easily reach them and may hand instruments to surgeons during procedures.
Claxton-Hepburn has two surgical technologists on staff, Kelley Dafoe and Kristina Baker.
