OGDENSBURG -- Staff on a Claxton-Hepburn medical surgical unit have reason to celebrate. The hospital says they have had 100 days without a patient fall.

With a goal of less than 4 patient falls per 1,000 days, the unit is consistently meeting and exceeding that goal with their recent 100 day accomplishment, CHMC said.

“Falls are challenging. They can happen so easily and are not uncommon in hospitals," patient safety and risk manager Kim Holmes said. "Anything we can do to keep fall prevention in the forefront of staff’s mind, we are doing.”

“We are doing things different. We have installed a new call system, new bed sensors and conduct safety huddles at the change of shift," medical surgical unit nurse manager Roberta Taylor said. "Our frontline staff is definitely taking a more proactive approach to prevent our patients from falling.”
