POTSDAM -- Clarkson University’s three-year-old physician assistant training program’s accreditation has been approved to continue.
The accreditation renewal also will allow larger class sizes for the program.
The Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) has granted Accreditation-Continued status to the Clarkson University Physician Assistant Program sponsored by the Potsdam school.
“Accreditation-continued” is granted when a currently accredited program is in compliance with the ARC-PA Standards.
Clarkson’s first class of physician assistant trainees began its work in January 2012. It had received accreditation the previous September after a year’s work in documenting its program.
Accreditation remains in effect until the program closes or withdraws from the accreditation process, or until accreditation is withdrawn for failure to comply with the standards. The next review by ARC-PA, the national accrediting agency for all U.S.-based physician assistant programs, is expected in March 2022. The review date is contingent upon continued compliance with the standards.
ARC-PA has also granted Clarkson a class size increase to 30 students per cohort, from the current 20.
Physician assistants (PAs) are licensed health professionals who practice medicine as members of a team with supervising physicians. PAs deliver a broad range of medical and surgical services to diverse populations in rural, urban and suburban settings.
As part of their responsibilities, PAs prescribe medication, conduct physical exams, diagnose and treat illnesses, order and interpret tests, counsel on preventive health care and assist in surgery.
The Clarkson PA program is a 28-month course of study granting a master of science degree in physician assistant studies.
