Clarkson University receives silver rating for sustainability initiatives
POTSDAM -- The Sustainability, Tracking, Assessment & Rating System (STARS) recently gave Clarkson University a silver rating for its sustainability initiatives.
Clarkson has been recognized for its “unconventional pairings,” its ability to incorporate a sustainability curriculum into its education and research, according to Clarkson staffers. The university scored 71 of a possible 100 points in the education and research ranking. Of 11 comparison schools in the state, only Ithaca College and Columbia University had higher scores.
Academic programs such as the major in environmental science and policy, minor in sustainable energy systems and Clarkson’s Adirondack Semester factored into the ranking, said Susan Powers, Susan Powers, professor and associate director for sustainability in the Institute for a Sustainable Environment. Lessons in sustainability have also been woven into other classes and majors across campus.
Clarkson also features sustainability themed clubs, such as ECO and the construction of a greenhouse for research on winter growth of food in cost-effective ways.
