Clarkson University offering new bachelor’s in mathematical economics

POTSDAM -- Clarkson University’s new bachelor of science degree in mathematical economics is an interdisciplinary program “designed to tackle the complexities of the business environment,” according to a news release from the school.

“The Mathematical Economics program at Clarkson has been designed to provide students with a multifocal view, with enough flexibility to allow students to find the path that works best for them,” Associate Dean of the Reh School of Business Luciana Echazu said in a prepared statement. “Students have the freedom to direct their study toward areas of their own interest, like fulfilling the complete set of core Business classes, or focusing on data analytics, financial analysis, or other areas, such as political science.”

Students will learn “a broad range of economic theories and mathematical techniques that, together, will enable them to apply rigorous empirical and theoretical analysis to contemporary issues in economics, finance and beyond,” the release said.

The program consists of a minimum of 27 credit hours in mathematics and statistics and a minimum of 24 credit hours in economics. Students can reach the 120 credits with free electives.

The New York State Department of Education (NYSED) approved the program in July. The first full class for this new major will be admitted in fall of 2019 as members of the class of 2023.
