Clarkson, SUNY Canton and Potsdam using state clean energy program on campus

Clarkson University, SUNY Canton and SUNY Potsdam are participating in a New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) and New York Power Authority (NYPA) program pledging to implement clean energy projects and principles on campus and in their local communities.

They are among more than 50 colleges and universities in the state that have signed the REV Campus Challenge, committed to improving campus efficiency, reducing carbon emissions, and engaging their local communities in the challenge.

The program supports New York's recent adoption of the Clean Energy Standard and its aggressive mandate to achieve 50 percent renewables by 2030.

An initiative of Gov. Andrew Cuomo, the REV Campus Challenge obtains commitments from two- and four-year public and private colleges and universities to demonstrate clean energy leadership in greenhouse gas emission reduction, research and development, curricula integration and community engagement.

The three St. Lawrence County colleges in the program are highlighted as “First Movers” that have joined the REV Campus Challenge in its first six months, thereby demonstrating leadership among their peers and demonstrating their commitment to clean energy, the announcement from NYSERDA and NYPA said. by

"Colleges and universities can play a critical role in driving clean energy activities by putting ideas from the classroom to work on campus and in their communities," said John B. Rhodes, President and CEO, NYSERDA.

"In working with many SUNY campuses on a range of energy efficiency projects, we know colleges and universities want to lead by example when it comes to clean energy," said Gil C. Quiniones, president and CEO, NYPA. "The REV challenge takes that commitment to a new level and puts New York in a better position to drastically reduce its greenhouse gas emissions."
