Clarkson University Higher Education Opportunity Program (HEOP) students recently read to Lawrence Avenue Elementary School students for a Read Across America event.
POTSDAM -- Clarkson University Higher Education Opportunity Program (HEOP) students encouraged children at Potsdam Central School to read.
HEOP participated with Lawrence Avenue Elementary School in their Read Across America event for the seventh year in a row. Read Across America is a nationwide reading celebration that takes places annually in recognition of Dr. Seuss's birthday.
Clarkson students volunteered to read to the elementary school class to promote a passion for reading. More than 115 copies of the book "Very Special Friends" by Jane Chapman were donated to the elementary school for this event.
Clarkson HEOP Assistant Director Erin Cook said students enjoy participating in Read Across America as a positive stress reliever in the middle of the semester.
"Our HEOP students love being part of this activity and appreciate being able to connect with the local elementary students," she said. "All of our students want to encourage others to continue to read as a hobby and always seek educational opportunities in life."
