POTSDAM – A silver Tiffany box that was the Thomas S. Clarkson prize in 1897 is now on display at the Potsdam Public Museum, 2 Park St.
SUNY Potsdam was the Potsdam Normal School from 1869-1942. The Thomas S. Clarkson prize was awarded to the graduating student at the "Normal" who produced the best essay on the topic of pedagogics, or the science of education.
The January 1897 prize went to Mary Francis Harris. The coveted prize consisted of a silver, lidded Tiffany box measuring 2" in diameter. The box originally contained three gold coins valued at $100, which is worth $2,727 in today's money.
The silver Tiffany box is now on display as part of the exhibition, "St. Lawrence Academy to SUNY Potsdam: 200 Years of Education."
The museum is open Tuesday-Saturday 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. Call 265-6910 for more information.
