POTSDAM -- Beginning in the fall, Clarkson University will offer a new master’s degree program in interdisciplinary bioscience and biotechnology.

“The Biology Department at Clarkson has recognized a need for a strong M.S. degree bioscience program. Currently, the only mechanism for pursuing an M.S. degree in bioscience at Clarkson University is the Master in Basic Science Program. the interdisciplinary bioscience and biotechnology master’s will be the first offered in New York State Education Department Regents Region 6,” Clarkson officials said in an announcement.

Strong undergraduate students at Clarkson and neighboring institutions can pursue a so-called “4-plus-1 option” in which they take two graduate courses their senior year and complete the master’s degree in a fifth year.

“It is a master’s equivalent of our Ph.D. program,” Clarkson biology chair Tom Langen said in a prepared statement. “We think this fits a niche that has been open for students who want to pursue a master’s degree, and students do for a lot of reasons in bioscience.”

The new degree program is intended for those who need a bioscience master’s degree to be competitive for biomedical and biotech industry scientific and administrative positions, or a bioscience master’s degree to be attractive for strong Ph.D. bioscience graduate programs, or else a bioscience master’s degree to be more competitive when applying for highly-competitive veterinary or medical school professional programs, school officials said.
